SAAM Game Jam

This game was made for the SAAM Arcade 2021 GameJam.

The theme was/is building community, embracing individualty;

In this game you try to connect as many shapes to bring them together (as a community). Every shape you connect has to have at least one thing in common, but by connecting them you're able to connect every shape to each other via others. It is, however, your choice in how to connect them.

By doing so you create your very own art piece. One like the once made by the great individuals, like Bradford, Pollock and Soto Sánchez, whom's work are displayed at museums like the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the like.

The game was inspired by 'Amendment #8' by Mark Bradford and i drew a lot of inspiration of the game 'Mini motorways'. The music used is made by VGcomposer.

A simply excellent game!

Conceptually the idea of actually recreating a painting through gameplay is extremely cool and the core gameplay loop of joining up similar shape and creating lines as a byproduct is likewise great. What I like about this the most is that you're almost creating the painting by accident, the piece is created as a side effect, not direct cause of you playing the game.

That said, ultimately I think that the final result ends up quite differently to Amendment # 8 by the end of it. Adding a slight transparency to the paint and darkening the letters with each layer of paint would help  it pop out more like the original instead of just looking like a Pollock painting. At least you won't need to change much for your actual planned Pollock painting down the line!

I love the fact that you can keep your painting once your done with it as well as the simplicity of just saving it to where you want instead of having to dig up some screenshot folder like in most games. Some of the extra features seemed a bit unnecessary. A pause functionality is always good but I don't see the point in speeding up the game if it just makes it borderline unplayable.

The Art and UI is very clean and pleasing but a better in game tutorial would be highly appreciated.

You've done a outstanding job at this, very well done! Can't wait for a full release!

Thanks so much for the feedback!

I agree, as it is right now the painting resembles Amendment #8 less the more you paint and I will adjust that in the next update. I will include an in-game tutorial as well, as the gameplay isn’t  straightforward when you first start playing.

I will have a look at the speeding up function. It was added in an earlier stage, where the spawn time in the beginning was quite slow. I will probably tweak it to something less than 2x normal playing speed it currently is.

Once again, I really appreciate the feedback!
